Titration

A highly experienced consultant psychiatrist will conduct a comprehensive assessment of your ADHD. This includes a thorough medical history, and an assessment using the typical ADHD questionnaires and rating scales.

Following your assessment you will be informed that medication may be beneficial in your particular situation. This will be discussed at your follow-up appointment (which can take place in person, via video link or over the phone). Your physician will explain to you the various options for medication and if you decide to start on medication we will recommend titrating dosage to ensure the benefits/side effects balance for you.

This process can take several weeks, and involves gradually adjusting your child's medication until the right balance has been achieved. It is not unusual to have to titrate two or three medicines before finding the best one for your child's ADHD symptoms. Parents must be involved in this titration process, and keep an eye on their child's behavior to let the doctor know whether the medication is helping or causing side effects.

If you decide to go back to NHS treatment you will receive an individual prescription for your medication. You will have to pay at the pharmacy. This is not included in the consultation fee. You'll need to attend six-monthly appointments to monitor your medication. This includes the measurement of pulse and blood pressure. Annual reviews are also mandatory.

Follow-up appointments

After the assessment is completed, you will be able to book appointment with the psychiatrist as necessary. The appointment usually takes place on zoom video call but in certain circumstances it is possible to schedule an audio-only consultation (again at an extra cost).

In this session, we'll discuss any treatment options we have and come up with a unique ADHD medication titration plan. This will include an assessment of your medication dosage as well as a discussion of any possible side effects you might be experiencing. These titration sessions cost PS150 for face-to-face sessions and PS60 via video or telephone consultation. The pharmacy will charge you for any medication costs.

The psychiatrist will also inquire with you about your family history and the impact that your ADHD symptoms have on your life, as well as any relationship issues you might be experiencing or other mental health problems that you may be suffering from. We suggest that if you are unsure about your preferences, talk to your GP prior to scheduling your private examination. Some providers have different policies regarding whether or not they require a GP letter. We also suggest to confirm that your GP accepts a "Shared-Care Agreement which means that after you have been discharged from the clinic you will be sent back to them to get the prescription for medication.

Medication

For many who wish to obtain an official diagnosis of ADHD treatment is a crucial element of their treatment. The process of getting prescriptions from an NHS psychiatrist can be difficult and time-consuming. NHS waiting lists are notoriously long, and GPs can be reluctant to refer patients to specialist services.

One way to get around this is to ask your GP to refer you to Right to Choose (see psychiatry-uk and ADHD 360). This means that you can select an organization that offers a private assessment and titration. This will help you save time and be more convenient, particularly in the event of a hectic schedule.
