Shorty headers usually work best in limited space engine bays, as well as lowered cars. They will also usually work well with your factory exhaust system, should you choose to keep it. You can get the most for your time and money by buying a set with equal length primaries. These will scavenge gas from each of your cylinders equally, meaning your power is consistent and your torque curve broader in the low to mid-range spectrum.
The original Small Block is compact and these headers compliment that and work well in most all applications. The best thermal and corrosion protection for your headers is our Aluminized Ceramic Coating. This finish offers the added benefit of lower under-hood temperatures and the highest level of protection to the header. These Headers are all Mandrel- bent out of 1.75″ 16 gauge tubing, heliarc welded 3/8″ thick lazer cut flanges, with 3″ collectors.
Dealerships could finally order a Firebird Convertible from a recognized coach builder that was already converting other GM products (though more than a dozen other companies had been converting F-bodies into convertibles since 1982 for Pontiac & Chevrolet dealers). ASC (American Sunroof Company, Later "American Specialty Cars") (of ASC McLaren fame) offered Pontiac Dealerships a Firebird/Formula/Trans Am/GTA convertible. ASC was contracted to convert all of the official Camaro Convertibles from 1987 to 1992. However, due to fuel economy restrictions mandated by the EPA, a convertible Firebird would have been assessed a $1200 Gas Guzzler Tax because the LB9 & L98 when paired with a Trans Am or GTA would have been lower than 22.5 average MPG.
A dark-tinted version of the base Firebird's tail lights were fitted to the rear of the car and also featured a Silver or Gold "Screaming Eagle" (Phoenix) between them. Rubber "Mini-Spats" (stone deflectors) were mounted just before the front and rear wheels, and were toned down from the 70's design used on the earlier second generation Trans Am. Styled loosely after the earlier '80/'81 Turbo Trans Am, an optional "Turbo Bulge" hood was available on the Trans Am. Plans had originally been made to use a refined version of Pontiac's 4.9 and Turbo 4.9L (301) engine. It was scrapped at the last minute, leaving many to speculate as to what could have been, had the engine been allowed to survive like its turbocharged companion, the Buick Turbo 3.8L V6. Despite this, the Turbo Bulge hood remained on the option list; on the V-8 RPO LU5 Crossfire 305 V-8, it was made functional, and even a lightweight aluminum version of this hood, "RPO T45", was available on the option list.
Dial in the right header for you Chevy Truck by narrowing your results with the useful filters below. All models available in mild steel construction, and our most popular configurations are now available in 100% 304 Stainless Steel. Choose Between Standard Uncoated, HTC Polished Silver Ceramic, or Black Maxx Satin Black Ceramic Coated.
Header wrap or exhaust wrap is a very effective way to reduce under-hood temperatures. It works by insulating the header tubes retaining the heat inside the headers and greatly reduces the heat radiating from the headers. It can be used in nearly any application and is available in black, white, and titanium colors (titanium is shown below). It is easily secured to the header tubes using header wrap ties or stainless steel hose clamps.
Ceramic coating will not only reduce corrosion but it also adds a thermal barrier which will reduce the under-hood temperatures. It is an excellent option to consider when you are using mild steel headers. Ceramic coating goes by many brand names and here at Speedway Motors ours is called AHC which stands for Armor Hot Coat. For a bit more information on Speedway Motors AHC coating, click here.
New tail light lenses were now introduced on the base Firebird, completing the replacement of the "slit" or "louvered" taillight lenses that had been a Firebird signature since 1967. The 2.5L 4-cylinder engine was dropped, replaced by the multi-port fuel-injected 2.8L V6 as the standard engine. The Firebird S/E model was discontinued at the end of the year.
All center, high-mounted stop lamps were relocated to a new position under the glass on the deck lid, and the large Firebird hood emblem disappeared forever. All V8s now received factory roller camshafts, and faced with consumer demands for more power, GM officially released the new 5.7L with tuned port fuel injection. Available only with an automatic transmission, it produced 215 hp and takes the top performance seat from the 5.0L TPI which was rated at 205HP. The 5.0L TPI, however, was available with a 5-speed manual transmission and, in fact, was quicker than the 5.7L TPI coupled with the automatic transmission. L69 production was stopped, leaving the LG4 as the only remaining carbureted V8 used in the F-body. Trans Am GTA (Gran Turismo Americano) was introduced, available with the LB9 305 TPI engine (which was returned to 205 hp) or the L TPI.
Choose either vintage/replica or modern/performance gauges to complement an authentic street style dash. Complete assembly comes with covered aluminum dash, dash buttons, toggles and indicator lights, switches, and horn. The four-spoke steering wheel frames an 85-mph speedometer and gauges for voltage, oil pressure, and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 30k miles, although the speedometer and odometer do not work. The bench seat is trimmed in blue vinyl upholstery joined by a color-coordinated dashboard, door panels, and carpets. Interior appointments include a sliding rear window, a push-button AM/FM stereo, air conditioning, and Chevrolet-branded rubber floormats.
Braking is handled by power-assisted front discs and rear drums, and the booster is mounted below the floor. All Firebirds received restyled noses loosely fashioned after the "Banshee IV" show car while Pontiac was developing the all-new fourth-generation platform. The Trans Am's ground effects were re-styled as well, and were made available as an appearance package on the base model Firebird, but unavailable on the Formula. The rarest 20th Anniversary Turbo Trans Ams are the hardtops and convertibles.
This in turn robs your motor of potential power and torque (this is a bad thing). Headers connect the primary tubes into a collector which scavenges exhaust gasses efficiently allowing for a more complete evacuation of the cylinder during the exhaust stroke. Beginning in 1991, SLP (Street Legal Performance) modified a factory-built Formula into what they called the "Firehawk".
You will receive notification of your enrollment in the extended product warranty program via email within 24 hours of placing your order. This is top quality soft wall exhaust hose It's pliable construction makes it easier to work with than hard wall hose. This hose allows you to make only very slight bends due to its corrugated design used in extreme-duty applications.
Pontiac sub-contracted the job of engineering the TTA engine modifications to PAS. The narrow engine bay of the Trans Am required the use of different cylinder heads, which happened to have better flow characteristics than the old Buick heads. Special stainless steel headers were made specifically for the project as well. The heads, headers, along with more refined tuning of the boost and fuel curves, all added up to a more powerful package than the older Buicks. Most TTAs came with T-tops and leather interior, but there were also hardtops and cloth-interior cars. And every TTA had an automatic transmission – the TH200-4R, equipped with overdrive and a torque converter clutch.
The three actual pace cars were randomly selected from the production run, and sent to Indianapolis to pace the race. Thus, the pace car replicas were closer to the actual pace cars than any replica previously offered; the only difference between the replicas and the three actual pace cars was the addition of strobe lights and safety equipment to the latter. As has been proven to be the case in subsequent years, relying on a small engine for cruising, and a turbocharger for power, provides an exciting driving experience while returning impressive fuel mileage. In 1989, Pontiac produced the quickest[15] and fastest[16] American production car.
Only three convertible TTAs were built by ASC,[19][20] one of which was bought by the president of PAS, with the other two falling into private hands. At least two of these test cars were sold to private individuals, so there are at least two extremely rare, non-white, factory TTAs in existence; in fact, one is known to be red. WS6 was standard equipment on the Formula and GTA from 1987 to 1992, and optional on the Trans Am. WS6 from 1987 until 1992 included 36 mm front sway bars, 24 mm rear sway bars, quick-ratio steering box, gas-filled struts and 16-inch wheels with 245/50R16 tires. Pat Musi has been at the forefront of electronic fuel injection (EFI) technology for over two decades, and that experience is available to every customer with custom-designed EFI systems, exclusive software and individualized tuning. The all-aluminum 1969 ZL1 version of the 427 engine was developed primarily for Can-Am racing,[citation needed] which did not require homologation to compete,; it was very successful in cars like the McLaren M8B. The ZL1 specifications were nearly identical to the production L88 version of the 427, but featured an aluminum cylinder block in addition to aluminum cylinder heads. The first Corvette with the RPO ZL1 engine package was built in early December 1968 and featured aluminum closed chamber heads shared with the L88. Both L88 and ZL1 optioned cars continued to be built with closed chamber heads until approximately March 1969, when the open combustion chamber aluminum heads finally were in production and began being fitted to the L88 and ZL1 engines. The ZL1 engine also featured a lightweight aluminum water pump, a camshaft that was slightly "hotter" than the L88's, and a specially tuned aluminum intake manifold.
Most of our techs agree that a street application 350 will benefit well from a header with 1 1/2" to 1 5/8" diameter primary tubes and 2 1/2 or 3 inch collectors. What this size does is creates a faster removal of spent gas and also develops just enough backpressure for a broad torque response. This marked the final production year for the Third Generation platform. Release of the Fourth Generation model was imminent, and Pontiac made few changes to the 1992 Firebird.
Chevrolet gave all 427 engines except the ZL1 a torque rating of 460 lb⋅ft (624 N⋅m). Many engine conversions will be up against manual transmissions. We offer pilot bushings for just about all of the combinations that we've encoutered over the years. Our Chevrolet V8 engine mounts are designed to make the installation go as well as possible, and to give you the installation flexibility your project may need.
The heavy wall construction of these manifolds means less heat-absorption by the tubing, which means less energy produced by the engine's combustion process is wasted as heat, and is instead conserved as energy and velocity going to your turbos. This also leads to cooler engine bay temperatures, which can also improve intake air temps, increasing the density of oxygen in the air, leading to further power gains. Sanderson’s Ceramic Coating is recommended for every vehicle application and is the default finish selection choice above. To meet high standards of quality, Sanderson applies a multi-layer inside and outside aluminized ceramic coating in-house and then polishes the coating to a high luster.
All V8 engines received serpentine belt systems and the air conditioning compressors were moved to the passenger's side of the engine, de-cluttering the engine compartment. The Firebird Formula received new high tech 16x8-inch aluminum wheels with distinctive silver "WS6" center caps. The GTA wheels were slightly restyled, and the convex 16-inch wheels were dropped as all Trans Ams received the 16x8-inch diamond-spoke aluminum wheels, available in different colors (white, red, charcoal, and black) in addition to the GTA's gold. The GTA received a new steering wheel with integral radio controls. The Trans Am was made available with body-colored ground effects like those on the GTA. All Firebirds received center, high-mounted stop lamps to comply with Federal legislation; these were placed on top of the back hatch window.

GM sold the Vortec 8100 to Workhorse (now a division of Navistar), making it one of the most popular engine choices in gasoline-powered Class A motorhomes during the early 2000s.
To provide a simple example, the header should not hang down below the bottom of the wheel. In the graphic below, a low-profile tire provides less ground clearance and therefore the bottom of the header should maintain a higher value from the ground. The newly designed side view mirror housings, made of light alloy metal, were almost cone shaped, with the point facing the wind. The windshield wipers were hidden under the hood with the air intake for the climate control system. The retractable headlamps popped up from the leading edge of the hood. Smooth wheelcovers were available on the Trans Am, attached to turbine finned alloy wheels. A frameless, flush-mounted, compound curved rear glass hatchback decklid provided 30.9 cu ft (0.87 m3). Of cargo space with the rear seats folded, and an optional wiper.[7] It provided no disturbance to the airflow over the back of the car.
Special Viscount "PMD" bucket seats were optional, featuring a small opening in the headrest and a PMD logo in the center of the backrest. Leather seats were also available on both the standard seats and Viscount "PMD" seats. A standard locking rear glovebox was mounted on the rear driver's side of the cargo area and a mini spare tire was hidden behind the opposite panel on the passenger side. A lockable cargo door on the rear floor area and a retractable cargo area privacy shade were also available as options on all Firebirds. The crew at BluePrint Engines have designed several drop-in engine/transmission packages for Factory Five customers. If you have our Factory Five kit, BluePrint will sell you the running gear needed to finish your car.
All of these features combined to provide a low coefficient of drag. The front end of the vehicle featured 10.5-inch (270 mm) power disc brakes and were now standard on all Firebird models. Taking styling cues from the 1981 design, the new car had full width tail lights, complete with a Firebird emblem in the center. The all-new suspension design was more advanced and aggressive than anything Detroit had offered previously, easily rivaling the Corvette's handling abilities, (but not its sophistication). The front suspension utilized MacPherson struts, with inboard mounted coil springs and lower front control arms. In the rear, coil springs and shocks were positioned between the body and solid rear axle, with twin rear lower control arms/trailing links and a torsion bar, replacing the old-fashioned leaf springs design used previously in the 2nd generation Firebird. A huge torque arm was mounted from the transmissions tailshaft to the rear axle center to further stabilize the axle's tendency to twist.
Whether you own a street car or are competing in street or drag racing, Lemons Headers are handcrafted and made-to-order, giving you a custom feel behind the wheel. They are a 1 of 1 design that are only compatible with certain head types. This is incredibly limiting, especially for professional racers who need a no-fuss fit for their exhaust. Firebirds optioned with T-tops received new acrylic plastic tops made by Leximar for GM. The new tops were lighter in weight and tinted darker, but were more dome shaped and aged rapidly.
We’re always happy to get to know our clients so we can craft the personalized header they deserve. A family business, Lemons Headers was opened in 1997 by Dan and Kathy Lemons. Since then, our company has spent over 25 years growing our capabilities, fine-tuning our skills, and building a close-knit, car community.
All Hedman C10 headers are made in the USA, and are covered by our limited lifetime warranty. Aftermarket headers are usually made from either mild steel or stainless steel. The basic mild steel headers will be quite a bit less in cost, however they will sacrifice durability and longevity due to rust and corrosion with long term use.
The Mk4 kit is configured to accommodate some big block Ford engines, small block Ford windsor engines, and modular 4.6L and the 5.0L Coyote engine. Kit comes with alternate drive pulley assembly, oil filter relocate kit, and exhaust assembly to adapt Mustang engine and headers to vintage side exit exhausts. Chevrolet capitalized on the versatility of the 427 design by producing a wide variety of high-performance, "over-the-counter" engine components as well as ready-to-race "replacement" engines in shipping crates. The 396 cu in (6.5 L) V8 was introduced in the 1965 Corvette as the L78 option and in the Z-16 Chevelle as the L37 option. Also retained from the W-series design were the race-proven Moraine M400 aluminum bearings first used in the 409, and the highly efficient "side oiling" lubrication system, which assured maximum oil flow to the main and connecting rod bearings at all times.
Although introduced as the Vortec 7400 in 1996, it was basically a 454 big-block with a hydraulic roller cam, parts more suitable for use in light trucks, and more advanced technology. The engine had MPFI (multi-port fuel injection), which gave slightly more power and better fuel economy, and two valves per cylinder. The engine had a bore and stroke of 4+1⁄4 in × 4 in (108.0 mm × 101.6 mm), producing 290 hp (216 kW) at 4000 rpm and 410 lb⋅ft (556 N⋅m) at 3200 rpm. In 1971, the LS-5 produced 365 hp (272 kW) and 550 lb⋅ft (746 N⋅m), and the LS-6 option came in at 425 hp (317 kW) and 575 lb⋅ft (780 N⋅m). In 1972, only the LS-5 remained, when SAE net power ratings and the move towards emission compliance resulted in a temporary output decline, due to lowered compression, to about 270 hp (201 kW) and 468 lb⋅ft (635 N⋅m). The 1973 LS-4 produced 275 hp (205 kW) and 468 lb⋅ft (635 N⋅m), with 5 hp (4 kW) and 10 lb⋅ft (14 N⋅m) gone the following year.
Moreover, headers like the headers for chevy small block engines can contribute to fuel economy under certain driving conditions. The use of small block turbo headers is particularly beneficial in turbocharged engines, where exhaust flow is crucial for turbo spooling and overall performance. SBC headers are crafted from various materials, each offering distinct advantages. Stainless steel variants, known for their durability and corrosion resistance, are common in the small block chevy exhaust headers category. The design of these headers, including mandrel-bent tubes, ensures a smooth exhaust flow. Additionally, sbc turbo headers are specifically engineered to accommodate turbocharged setups, optimizing exhaust scavenging for boosted applications.
Please choose below which Header Options you would like to add to your headers. Founded in Sydney Australia with one CNC Machine increasing to sixty 5-Axis CNC machines before being acquired in 2013. The Company's main focus has always been "Speed to Market", launching 1,200+ new products each year. Needing just one month to develop a new product and get it on to the shelf, compared to the six-month industry average.
The interior still featured its namesake tan leather Recaro seats. This was the swan song year for Pontiac's black and gold RPO "Y84" Trans Am S/E's, and 1,321 Recaro T/A's were produced. This 1986 Chevrolet C10 Scottsdale pickup is powered by a 5.3-liter Vortec V8 linked with a 4L60E four-speed automatic transmission and the truck is finished in white and blue over blue vinyl upholstery. Equipment includes a Belltech lowered suspension, 20″ American Racing wheels, power steering, power front disc brakes, an aluminum radiator, and Speed Engineering long-tube headers.
The custom interior is trimmed in red and white vinyl and outfitted with a Lokar shifter, tilt steering column, and Dolphin instrumentation. This customized ’39 Ford is now offered with a clean Texas title in the seller’s name. The Firebird remained basically unchanged from the previous model year. All automatic transmission Firebirds now received a T-handle shifter knob, and the shift indicator changed for the Automatic Overdrive 700-R4. Midyear, the L69 high output 305 cubic inch engine was introduced. In all forms (except the aluminum ZL-1), the Mark IV was slightly heavier than the W-series model, with a dry weight of about 685 lb (311 kg).
Midyear, Pontiac introduced a new light-weight, cross-lace wheel, available for the Trans Am. Apart from the ease of a perfect fit, we want to help your car achieve superior performance. With that in mind, the dimensions of your header will impact your cars overall performance. When sizing a header, some obvious points to consider would be displacement, compression ratio, and horsepower.

It had slightly reduced power compared to the L and used a different PCM. The L21 was paired with the early 4-speed Allison automatic transmission or manual transmission, depending on the application. Beginning in 1969, the highest performance 427 models were fitted with the new open (vs. closed) chamber cylinder heads, along with design improvements in crankshafts, connecting rods, and pistons, adopted from the Can-Am development program. The first iteration of the W-series engine was the 1958 "Turbo-Thrust" 348-cubic-inch (5.7 L), originally intended for use in Chevrolet trucks but also introduced in the larger, heavier 1958 passenger car line. Bore and stroke was 4+1⁄8 in × 3+1⁄4 in (104.8 mm × 82.6 mm), resulting in a substantially oversquare design.
Bore x stroke were both up from the 348 cu in (5.7 L) to 4.31 in × 3.5 in (109.5 mm × 88.9 mm). On December 17, 1960, the 409 engine was announced along with the Impala SS (Super Sport) model. The initial version of the engine produced 360 hp (268 kW) with a single 4-barrel Carter AFB carburetor.
Along with the goodies on the inside of the car, the MK4 complete kit is loaded with the right parts on the outside. The MK4 Complete kit comes with all the interior accessories you need. If your vehicle is using aftermarket components, parts from other applications, or custom altered parts, then it is the installer's responsibility to verify fitment. The Trans Am GTA was Pontiac's pride and joy with a standard 5.7L 350 Tuned-Port Injection (TPI). All of these options were packaged into the Trans Am under the RPO code Y84, and the model was produced until the end of third-generation F-body production in 1992.
This also allowed GM to experiment with some of the new technologies which were to be implemented on the fourth generation cars. The Formula was the only third-generation F-body to get to T-tops with a 350 cubic inch engine starting in MID year 1991 & 1992, to get a FORMULA 350 T-top car the black cross laced wheels (as installed on the Trans AM) were mandatory. The entire premise behind an aftermarket exhaust system, as well as headers, is to allow for enhanced evacuation of exhaust gases. If these gases remain in the combustion chamber, they will be taking up space better used by fresh air and fuel.
The Trans Am drag coefficient was measured at 0.32 but was as low as 0.29 with the standard Aero wheels instead of the High-Tech turbo aluminum wheels. At the time, it was the most aerodynamically efficient car GM ever produced. The new Firebird shrank to a 101-inch wheelbase, losing more than 8 inches in overall length, measured about an inch narrower, and weighed nearly 500 lb (227 kg) less than its 1981 predecessor.
It was delineated from the base Firebird model by "S/E" script on the sail panels, in place of the standard Firebird decals, and the Trans Am's dark tinted tail lights. The interior featured color-coded plastics & material to match the exterior/interior paint scheme. On S/E models equipped with the 14-inch or 15-inch "Turbocast" rims, "Bowling Ball" hubcaps were color-coded to match the car's exterior paint.
] there were no 350 TPI L98 cars made in 1986 according to Pontiac. The Recaro T/A was no longer available, but cloth Recaro seats were optional on the Trans Am. Join our email list to receive the latest tech updates and products, tuning tips, and newsletters.
Gold 16-inch, flat-mesh, diamond-spoke wheels were standard on GTA, with 16-inch, 20-slot wheels standard on Trans Am. The Trans Am's basic layout was very similar to the earlier 1983 Trans Am, except they were now available with the optional RPO W62 ground effects package, previously used on the 1983 Daytona Pace Car Edition. Another new for 1984 option was the "High-Tech" 15-inch, 20-slot, concave aluminum wheels, painted gold or silver, with black plastic centercaps containing a gold or silver Firebird logo. L69-equipped Trans Ams also received an 8,000 RPM tachometer, an 80 PSI oil pressure gauge, a high-output single electric fan, a functional cold-air induction hood, a higher output mechanical fuel pump, and a secondary electric fuel pump to help prevent vapor lock. The Trans Am came standard with a new incarnation of its traditional "Air Extractors" on the fenders.

JEGS Tubular Headers offer an immediate increase in performance by eliminating backpressure, improving exhaust flow, and building more horsepower. The consistent tubing diameter contributes to the smooth airflow and higher exhaust velocity. Ecklers/Turn5 Inc. is proud to offer an optional 12 month extended limited warranty to our customers that purchase an eligible product.
This engine was rated at 230 net hp, 380 lb-ft net torque, and was discontinued after 1995, with GM coming out with the Vortec 7400 in 1996. OE-quality exhaust products engineered for today's medium-duty and heavy-duty vehicles. Once we have established your header needs, it is time to start planning the construction. Since Lemons Headers are handmade and custom, we build based off the measurements provided by the client. Due to the nature of the product, it is crucial that the measurements provided are correct, so we can build you the custom header your engine needs. So, before submitting your measurements, it is always wise to double, triple, and quadruple check that they are right.
Brand-new, reasonably priced, high-performance, drop-in engines that are dyno-tested with full warranty and ready to run. The Vortec 7400 L29 7.4 L (454 cu in) V8 was a truck version of the Chevrolet big-block engine. Introduced in 1996, it was produced for five years, until replaced by the Vortec 8100.
We also make it easy for you to use the engine of your choice with a variety of available headers and engine/transmission mount assemblies. Mark IV engines also found themselves widely used in power boats. Many of these engines were ordinary Chevrolet production models that were fitted with the necessary accessories and drive system to adapt them to marine propulsion. Mercury Marine, in particular, was a major user of the Mark IV in marine drives, and relabeled the engines with their corporate logo. As with the 265 and 283 cu in (4.3 and 4.6 L) "small-block" engines, the W-series valve gear consisted of tubular steel pushrods operating stud-mounted, stamped-steel rocker arms.
The purchase of this kit will serve as a credit to the final price of custom headers. I’d like to start off with how fast the shipping is, within a few days my new headers and down pipe arrived. After bolting everything down sadly I missed the nut that goes over an empty valve hole, and it fell off driving. I reached out to flashark and only asked for a replacement nut, not only did they respond within the hour I had sent the email, not only did they replace the nut, I got the whole new set of headers and downpipe. Amazing service, amazing products as well (I love the headers).
Some GTA's ended up with drum brakes on the rear, presumably because of a shortage of disc brake parts. Ultimately, very few Trans Ams, GTA's, and Formulas were produced in this model year, as most buyers were waiting for the next-generation models. If you're looking for headers designed for maximum street performance, look no further than PCE. They are designed for stock or mildly modified engines for the value-conscious buyer.
The cabin is outfitted with a sliding rear window, a push-button AM/FM stereo, and air conditioning. The selling dealer acquired the truck in 2022 and has since added approximately 1,500 miles. This C10 is now offered in Alabama with an owner’s manual and a North Carolina title. These RS-X symmetrical port cylinder heads are named for powertrain engineer Ron Sperry, who designed them as one of his final accomplishments in more than 50 years working on General Motors performance and racing engines. Sperry also introduced symmetrical ports to Chevy's iconic small-block V-8, with the Gen III LS1 engine that debuted in the 1997 Chevrolet Corvette.
The design delivers a unique, eye-catching appearance to the engines of street rods, customs cars and trucks. Where other header manufacturers use a typical flat header flange and gasket for sealing, the patented raised flange design of the Sanderson Headers requires different flanges for different small block Chevy exhaust port shapes. Other header flanges will often block the top of the exhaust port on D-port heads. However, using the wrong flange with a Sanderson header may expose open areas that will not seal, creating an exhaust leak. The ZoomieSBC header set for small block Chevrolet engine applications.
For racing applications such as circle track cars, a 350 engine will commonly be outfitted with 1 3/4 or 1 7/8 inch primary tube size and a 3 inch or 3 1/2 inch collector. These engines typically have more horsepower and run at higher RPM than street engines do which dictate the need for larger header tube sizes. For even higher horsepower and sustained RPM such as found in drag race engines a 350 would commonly be outfitted with 1 7/8 or possibly 2 inch primary tubes and 3 or 3 1/2 inch collectors. A 409 cu in (6.7 L) version was Chevrolet's top regular production engine from 1961 to 1965, with a choice of single or 2X4-barrel Rochester carburetors.
Some common types of shorty headers are block hugger, tight tuck, and clipster headers. This 1939 Ford Deluxe coupe was turned into a street rod under prior ownership, and it is powered by a 350ci chevy sbc headers V8 mated to a TH350 three-speed automatic transmission. Finished in black with red pinstriping, the car features a chopped roof, shaved exterior, louvered hood, rear fender skirts, tunneled taillights, and chrome bumpers. Front disc brakes have also been added along with a dropped front axle and a Ford 9″ rear end.
The 366 cu in (6.0 L) big-block V-8 gasoline engine was used in Chevrolet medium duty trucks and school buses. It had a bore and a stroke of 3.935 in × 3.76 in (99.9 mm × 95.5 mm). This engine was made from the 1960s until 2004.The 366 used 4 rings on the pistons, as it was designed from the very beginning as a truck engine. The 366 was produced only as a tall-deck engine, with a deck 0.4 in (10 mm) taller than the 396, 402, and 454 short-deck big-blocks.
GM stopped installing big-block V8s in the Silverado HD trucks when the GMT800 series was discontinued in 2007. In May of 1999 CK5 started out as a tribute to America's favorite 4x4 utility truck. Since then it has grown to be a leader among full size Chevrolet K5 Blazer and GMC Jimmy web sites across the Internet. Order with total confidence when you shop at Southwest Performance Parts. Our high quality products and ultra-competitive prices give us a leg up on the competition.
A 409 hp (305 kW) version of this engine was also available, developing 1 hp per cubic inch with a dual four-barrel aluminum intake manifold and two Carter AFB carburetors. It had a forged steel crankshaft.[14] This dual-quad version was immortalized in the Beach Boys song titled "409". The market offers a range of sbc exhaust headers, each tailored for different applications. Chevy 350 headers are sought after for their compatibility with the popular 350 small block engines, providing a significant uplift in performance. For those seeking to boost their vehicle's efficiency, exhaust headers for 350 chevy engines are a go-to choice, as they are designed to facilitate better exhaust gas flow. Small block chevy headers also come in various styles, such as sbc block hugger headers for tight engine compartments and sbc shorty headers for ease of installation and maintenance.
It also was the most aerodynamic production Firebird to date with a drag coefficient of 0.33. The new Trans Am took things a bit further, with a coefficient of .32.[6] The Trans Am body would continue to improve aerodynamically over the years, and by 1985 would be the most aerodynamic vehicle to ever be released from General Motors with a 0.29 coefficient of drag. Wind tunnels were used to form the third-generation F-Body's shape, and these aerodynamic developments were fully taken advantage of by Pontiac's design team. The sleek new car had a low slung front end which featured split grilles. They fed some air to the radiator but most of the air came from an air dam underneath the front bumper.
This remained the procedure for dealerships through the 1989 model year. According to ASC, they did not convert any Firebirds for the 1990 model year. As popularity increased and car became lighter & more aerodynamic for the 1991 model year, the process was simplified as Pontiac offered a convertible through normal dealer ordering channels via RPO's. A Total of 173 Firebird Convertibles were reported by ASC for 1987. Over the years we have expanded our chassis kit to include factory-new parts as well. The only additional things you’ll need are your own engine/transmission/rear end, wheels/tires, and paint.

Available in two lengths and includes individual baffle inserts for each tube. Included below is a chart showing the dimensions commonly used for header measurement when checking for fitment, especially with universal fit headers. Here at Speedway Motors we list these dimensions on each product page, and you can narrow your search results by them as well. Chrome plating is another header coating option you may consider, however it is typically suggested for a show car type of application only.
Early in 1989, Motor Trend ran their top speed test article "Flat-out Fastest American Cars II-the Sequel". During this test, the TTA did 162 mph, and was the fastest production car evaluated in the test. In fact, with $300 in new parts installed, 12.5-second quarter-mile runs were achievable – without manually shifting gears or the need to trailer the vehicle to the track. Because of this, the TTA has gained a cult following among amateur racing enthusiasts. The LG4 & L69 continued on, but a new fuel-injected 305ci was now available in the Trans Am. The LB9 Tuned Port Injection (TPI) 305 was released, using a tuned runner design.

The problem originates in the technical understanding of what constitutes a true D-PORT versus a D-shape. The D-Port roof extends well above the centerline of the exhaust port, whereas the D-shaped port fits nicely inside what is deemed a standard port dimension. As shown in the graphic below, the d-shape easily fits within the common round or square port flange opening. Many specialty header designs such as Lake Headers, Lake Pipes, and Zoomies are designed to be era correct for certain car builds.

L69 were built in 1986; it was discontinued because of fuel vapor lock (boiling) problems. ] indicate the 305 TPI engine output was decreased from 210 hp to 190 hp caused by switching to a less aggressive camshaft profile, while others[who? Paint RPO's were changed to reflect the new base-coat/clear-coat paint process. American Sunroof (ASC), licensed by Chevrolet to build the 1987 Camaro convertible, also built three 1986 Trans Am convertibles as a "design exercise".
The wrap-around wing was now made of fiberglass to reduce weight and became standard on Trans Am and Formula; the regular, flat-surfaced spoiler from earlier Trans Am models was now made standard on Firebird. Trans Am and Formula were also offered with an optional 140 mph speedometer. It too used the new for '85 nose and rear bumper, but it now included some new items to set it apart.
To provide clearance for that long-stroke, engineers modified both the block and the connecting rods. Four-bolt main caps and a forged rotating assembly assure strength and durability. During development, a single engine endured more than 200 simulated drag strip passes on a dynamometer. From 1991, the 454 was updated to the new Gen V block, crankshaft and heads.
Vortec 8100s were built at GM's Tonawanda Engine plant while the engine block and cylinder head were cast at Saginaw Metal Casting Operations. The ZZ632's iron block shares a mold with Chevrolet Performance's ZZ572 crate engines, but the castings are machined to accommodate the huge 632 cubic-inch displacement. The bore grows by 0.040 in (1.0 mm), compared to the 572-cubic-inch V8s, with most of the displacement gain coming from a stroke that is 0.375 in (9.5 mm) longer.
The highly successful and versatile 427 cu in (7.0 L) version of the Mark IV engine was introduced in 1966 as a production engine option for full-sized Chevrolets and Corvettes. The bore was increased to 4+1⁄4 in (108 mm), with power ratings varying widely depending on the application. With a four-barrel carburetor, the base Turbo-Thrust produced 250 hp (186 kW). A special "Tri power" triple-two-barrel version, called the "Super Turbo-Thrust", produced 280 hp (209 kW). A "Special Turbo-Thrust" upped the power output to 305 hp (227 kW) with a single large four-barrel carburetor.
Mark IV engines saw extensive application in Chevrolet and GMC medium duty trucks, as well as in Blue Bird Corporation's All American and TC/2000 transit buses (the latter up until 1995, using a 427 with purpose-built carburetor). In addition to the 427, a 366 cu in (6.0 L) version was produced for the commercial market. Both the 366 and 427 commercial versions were built with a raised-deck, four-bolt main bearing cap cylinder to accommodate an extra oil control ring on the pistons. Unfortunately, the raised deck design complicated the use of the block in racing applications, as standard intake manifolds required spacers for proper fit.
Mechanical lifters and Tri power brought the "Special Super Turbo-Thrust" up to 315 hp (235 kW). For 1959 and 1960, high-output versions of the top two engines were produced with 320 hp (239 kW) and 335 hp (250 kW) respectively. In 1961, power was again increased to 340 hp (254 kW) for the single four-barrel model, and 338 hp (252 kW) when equipped with Tri power. The combustion chamber of the W-series engine was in the upper part of the cylinder, not the head, the head having only tiny recesses for the valves. This arrangement was achieved by combining a cylinder head deck that was not perpendicular to the bore with a crowned piston, which was a novel concept in American production engines of the day. As the piston approached top dead center, the angle of the crown combined with that of the head deck to form a wedge-shaped combustion chamber with a pronounced quench area.
Once a Formula had been ordered or purchased, this limited-availability option (RPO code B4U) could be specified, and the vehicle was sent to SLP to be modified. No two cars SLP produced were alike; they all were special orders. Of those 25 Firehawks, 21 were "Mandatory" Red, 1 Aqua, 1 White, 1 Blue, and 1 Green; 11 had the Competition Package, 3 came with aluminum engine blocks, 1 had T-Tops, and 1 was a convertible. The interior now featured aircraft inspired details and gauges, using both fake and real Torx head screws that fastened the dash and console trim panels. A 3-spoke steering wheel was used and featured a clear plastic 3D Firebird logo button, mounted in the center of the horn pad, with optional leather grip.
While selecting the right headers, it's important to consider the specific requirements of your vehicle and engine to ensure optimal performance gains. In addition to purchasing this product, Flashark highly recommends that you purchase Flashark and Spelab's new collaborative product, the silicone coolant hose kit; to replace the stock rubber coolant hose in your car's cooling system. Are silicone coolant hoses better? Coolant hoses transport the coolant—a mixture of water and antifreeze—from the engine to the radiator and back. The coolant absorbs heat from the engine block and heads and then releases this heat through the radiator, where airflow dissipates it away from the vehicle. This continuous flow is crucial for preventing engine overheating, which can lead to severe damage or failure. The structural differences between exhaust headers and manifolds are the material and size.
The LB9 produced 210 hp, which brought it suitable attention from buyers despite being unavailable with a manual transmission. The "Turbo Bulge" hood was discontinued in favor of a new flat hood with twin louvered vents or "nostrils" that were functional, with heat exhaust vents on the rear edges. The Trans Am also received a restyled nose, integral fog lights, and newly redesigned ground effects.
To be clear, 99% of all applications will use the standard 16″ length. The longer 19″ version requires a much higher chassis or engine location to allow necessary ground clearance. Red-finished steel wheels wear spun-aluminum covers and are mounted with Coker Classic whitewall tires. The front suspension features a dropped axle, a transverse leaf spring, and split wishbones, while lowering blocks have been added to the rear leaf springs.
VATS-equipped cars also displayed anti-theft system warning decals in the lower rear corners of the side windows. A new CD player was offered, shoulder belts were added in the back seat, and the convertible model carried over. The 170 hp LG4 carbureted 5.0L V8 was dropped in favor of the new 170 hp L03 5.0L V8 with throttle body injection.
On the other hand, stainless steel headers will not rust or corrode but cost more up front. The Grant GT steering wheel is mounted to a tilting column, and white-dial Dolphin instrumentation consists of a 140-mph speedometer, an 8k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges. Like the Camaro, the 1990 Firebird only received a half-year production run, as Pontiac labored to release the restyled 1991 model.
From the material, exhaust headers are made of lighter, thinner steel, while exhaust manifolds are made of thick iron. When in use, exhaust manifolds create back pressure, which lowers performance. Because each cylinder of the engine is given its own tube, however, headers eliminate this problem; thus, allowing the gases to exit without the creation of back pressure. Therefore, exhaust headers are a BETTER choice than an exhaust manifold.
The spark plugs were inserted vertically into the quench area, which helped to produce a rapidly moving flame front for more complete combustion. Chevrolet had introduced its popular small-block V8 in 1955, but needed something larger to power its medium duty trucks and the heavier cars that were on the drawing board. The big-block,[11] which debuted in 1958 at 348 cu in (5.7 L), was built in standard displacements up to 496 cu in (8.1 L), with aftermarket crate engines sold by Chevrolet exceeding 500 cu in (8.2 L). In conclusion, SBC headers are a pivotal upgrade for those looking to enhance their vehicle's performance. With a variety of types available, from chevy headers 350 to shorty headers for sbc, there is a header set to meet the needs of any small block chevy sbc headers engine configuration.

Amazing product and would highly recommend them to everyone looking to upgrade their upper control arms. These are currently offered with 1.75" 11ga primary tube size, with a 2.50" manifold size and vband outlet. In 1979, the company was founded with Pete's Performance, which was a small speed workshop.
Pontiac was asked to provide a car to pace the 73rd running of the Indianapolis 500; it would be the final time a Pontiac would ever receive that honor. The Trans Am model was now 20 years old, and it was time for another anniversary edition, with this special 20th Anniversary Trans Am to be based on the existing Trans Am GTA. Ultimately, 1,555 TTA replicas, rated at 250 hp, were produced for sale, five of those being test cars. But short-distance sprinting was not all this car could do well.
